For decades now comic creators have utilized music to create characterization, provide context, establish a tone or build a narrative. Whether it be James O’Barr’s use of post-punk and the emerging goth scene to set the tone for his seminal work The Crow, or Daniel Clowes incorporating Ramones’ lyrics to demonstrate Enid’s counter-culture credentials in Ghost World, the use of lyrics, albums, scenes, name dropping and even playlists has become a well utilized postmodern tool in the world of comics. The panel will focus on that intertextuality through a discussion with creators and educators about how music has wormed its way into their comics and classrooms.
