Stakeout is the process of moving or transferring points on a field planning map (the earth's surface).
The purpose of stakeout measurements in embankment and excavation work is to determine or establish the boundaries of the embankment and excavation, thereby determining the volume of work.
These fixed points are marked with stakes and colored tape.
A total station is an optical/electronic instrument used in mapping and building construction. A total station is an integrated theodolite with an electronic distance meter (EDM) component to read distances and slope angles, or coordinate positions from the instrument to a specific point.
