Net zero means we reduce carbon emissions to a minimum, and balance any we do emit by removing an equal amount - but how is it like trying to stop your bath from overflowing?
When filling a bath you would usually put the plug in and turn the taps on until you get to the level you want.
But, what if the taps won’t turn off? The bath will start to overflow.
To avoid this you can turn the taps down as far as they go, but the water level will still rise.
So we can also pull out the plug, and draining the same amount of water as the taps are putting in means we have balance – the bath is at Net Zero!
In the same way, we can’t turn off greenhouse gas emissions completely (yet!)
So we need to find ways to keep emissions as low as possible while also finding ways to take carbon out of the atmosphere.
