Hear from Dr Loup Cellard from the University of Melbourne, who argues we need to bring the materiality of digital systems to the forefront, to better consider the ecological impacts of online and data systems.

Loup Cellard is an ethnographer and design researcher working in the tradition of science & technology studies (STS) and materialist approaches to media studies. His research focused on the environmental implications of algorithms, data centres and telecommunication subsea cables. He worked at the ADM+S Centre (Melbourne Law School) as a Postdoctoral research fellow studying the ecological impacts and regulation of Automated Decision-Makings between June 2021 and August 2023, and will continue in the future to contribute to the Centre activities on this topic.

In September 2023, Loup began his role as a researcher at the French cooperative Datactivist where he is helping organisations explain and document their algorithm use.
