Hi all, important note: newer versions of Blender make it easy to import an animated GIF - see this video for details on that:    • Blender 3.4.1 for Video Editing - What's New?
(I'm keeping this video up for reference)

If you are still working with Blender v2.8 or earlier, then this video will show you what you can do. The first step is to convert it to another format, and after importing it there's a couple ways we can finish setting it up in our project.
Time codes:
0:00 Intro - what's an animated GIF?
1:00 FFmpeg to convert the animated GIF to a series of PNG images
4:56 Adding the images into Blender without scaling
6:26 Easy Method part 1: duplicating the Image Strip
7:40 Easy Method part 2: Adjusting playback speed
9:24 Adding scene to the main project
10:17 Fun Method (VSE, Graph Editor)

The free "FFmpeg" software might already be on your computer. If not, visit the FFmpeg website to find a package to download: https://ffmpeg.org/download.html

Here is one of the example commands I ran in the video:
ffmpeg -i PBJT.gif dude_%02d.png
