Horse Play of Rhode Island: "Every horse here has a story and we will tell the story of each one in coming weeks. All Life is Sacred. Some were race horses, some were show horses, some were pets that children outgrew, others were injured and of "no further use" . Others were running wild with their families until it was decided they no longer "belonged" there. Battered, broken, one trailer ride away from slaughter, each has found safety, solace and love here at Horse Play.
We have been at our present location for 10 years and have been "full" since 2008, even with adoptions / placements. The economy has brought a huge increase in the price of hay and feed. We are currently supporting 25 equines with average cost per horse at $300. Several of our horses are elders with special needs - meds and diet - with an average care cost of $400 per month each. We struggle month to month to provide the needed medicines and supplements.
Over the last few years, our paddocks and fencing have begun to show signs of wear-&-tear. In order to keep our horses safe, happy and healthy, we need to replace some fencing, acquire a new round pen (training purposes) and have 3 paddocks excavated and re-footed with gravel. We have found with increase in feed and hay prices, we do not have funding for fencing and paddock maintenance - which we urgently need!
