Barcelona is the caput mundi, at least these days for America's Cup fans, of course, but also for car enthusiasts, as Cupra has chosen to present its Terramar here. The location was even more significant, given that the preview of the Spanish manufacturer's SUV took place beneath the stands of the historic circuit from which it takes its name.
I was able to observe it up close, with a very distinctive livery that, coincidentally, pays homage to the most prestigious Match Racing competition, with a truly captivating livery.
MQB Evo platform, 4.52 meters long, 1.58 meters high, 1.86 meters wide, and a wheelbase of 2.68 meters, on defined, sporty proportions, already glimpsed on other models in the range. After all, a winning fleet doesn't change, and the evolved stylistic direction already demonstrated on the Formentor and Leon is evident, with small, less aggressive and more elegant evolutions.
There are five different engines, available across three different levels of electrification: starting with the base model, the 48-volt mild hybrid with a 1.5-liter gasoline engine producing 150 hp, paired exclusively with a 7-speed DSG transmission.
Then we move on to the "pure" gasoline options, the 2.0-liter TSI, available in two versions. The first delivers 204 hp and is paired with a 7-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission and all-wheel drive.
The second 2.0-liter engine delivers 265 hp, also paired with a 7-speed DSG and all-wheel drive. This engine will be the designated powertrain for the VZ version, the Veloz, which has become a hallmark of the Cupra range. Then there is the plug-in variant, available in both 204 hp and 272 hp versions (also the VZ version).
The battery pack paired with the electric motor will have a capacity of 19.7 kWh, meaning that theoretically, under the WLTP regime, the Terramar can travel 100 km in 100% electric mode. The battery charge reaches 11 kW in AC mode and 50 kW in DC mode.
From a technical standpoint, however, the work has been significant. While it's true that the platform is the MQB Evo, the tuning work has been significant: the setting of the MacPherson struts in front and the multilink in the rear, lowered by 10 mm, the work on bushings, springs, and shock absorbers, the weight distribution, as well as the steering box, have been key factors in the driving dynamics.
Even more so considering that the Terramar will also be equipped with dynamic chassis control with two-valve shock absorbers, for a further personalized experience.
