Who determines what is "normal" and "abnormal" in psychology? What criteria define who is considered "normal," who is most "suitable" or "adjusted" to a particular way of life in a specific society? If so, this psychology acts in a conservative manner, preventing the emergence of the new, of other ways of living, relating, and working.
"(...) our ideal constructions of health and normality in general harbor moral values of the dominant culture of society; because they are dominant, they have established themselves in science and profession as a reference for the behavior and ways of being of subjects. The biggest problem is that we have not assumed this adherence. We have pointed to these values and references as natural to man; as universal. In this way, we work to maintain the dominant values and to justify them as the only possibility of being in the world. The different becomes the object of combat; seen as a crisis, as maladjustment or imbalance; it becomes "treated," with the aim of returning to the healthy and natural condition of man. Psychology thus becomes a conservative profession that works to prevent the emergence of the new."
