CDI Unit Replacement (Ignition Pack) on 50HP Mercury 2 Stroke Outboard
The CDI unit or ignition box is responsible for storing spark from the stator and transferring it to the ignition coil via signal from the trigger. Occasionally the CDI unit will fail and produce an intermittent spark when the motor gets hot. Such was the case with my 1989 50HP Mercury 2-Stroke. When the engine got hot, the fire would cut out and we were left stranded twice due to this failure. The next morning, the motor would fire up just fine. Traced the problem to the CDI unit and this is what we replaced in this video. No issues with losing fire after replacement and we fished on two 90 degree days and drove all over the lake.
