Tri-Color Epoxy Resin Bath Tray Tutorial | How To
In this video, Steve & Aram take you through their process for creating a stunning tri-colored bath tray using epoxy resin. We started off by constructing the form for this piece. Upon receipt of the measurements for the piece, we constructed it out of plywood and Tyvek tape. You can use any sort of saw you prefer to cut off the sides for your mold. We use a table saw by Dewalt which can be found linked below. After cutting the sides of the form we assembled it using screws with a thick thread and made sure to line the entirety of the form with Tyvek tape. This is crucial so no epoxy sticks onto your form. Finally, we highly recommend sealing all edges of your form with silicone to ensure there are no areas in which your piece will leak.
Once you have your form constructed you can now adhere your wooden pieces to the form. We use hot glue and stick it to the underside of the wood and place it into the form in a way that we would like to see the epoxy flow through the piece. Alternatively, you can use a weight on top of your wood to hold it down and ensure that it does not move once the epoxy is poured however typically hot glue will work just fine unless you are working with a piece that is extremely heavy. Now that you have your pieces in your form you are ready for the pour! We mixed up a 2 to 1 ratio of Upstart Epoxy Deep Pour Epoxy and combined it with a few beautiful colors from black diamond pigments.
We usually give our Deep Pour Epoxy 48 to 72 hours to cure although in high temperatures it can actually cure faster. After removing the piece from the form we take it outside in the first step is to trim the edges. We recommend a table saw, jigsaw, or some other type of power saw to help you do this. This will ensure that all of the edges of the piece are clean and crisp. After this, you can take it to be sanded with a belt sander or high-powered sander. This will scuff up the surface of the piece and prepare it for the planer. Once you have sanded both sides of your piece you can run it through the planer. Once you have finished using the planer we recommend sanding it on both sides from 60 grit to 220 grit. Once you have finished sanding it you can also route the edges using a router with a beveled edge chamfer bit. Once you have finished refining the piece you can take it inside and decide if you would prefer a glossy finish or a matte finish.

In order to prepare the epoxy resin, it is a very simple one-to-one ratio. Mix part A and mix part B into a mixing cup. Once you have mixed it up you can go ahead and pour the epoxy over your piece and make sure to evenly distribute it using a spreader and don’t forget to finish the sides as well. Put on some rubber gloves and rub the edges of the piece to make sure nothing is left behind.
Usually, the table type Epoxy cures very quickly, 24 hours is usually sufficient but you wanna make sure that it is not tacky so you can gently touch it throughout the process to make sure it has fully cured. If you decided to take the tabletop epoxy route you will notice that there are drips on the underside of your piece and are probably wondering how to take care of those. There’s a very simple solution, we recommend taking it back outside and using a sander from 60 to 220 grit on the side with the underside drips. This will easily take care of those strips and will prepare the underside of your piece for a beautiful matte finish using wood oil.
