Top 5 Tips to Avoid Getting Computing Viruses
We have been seeing an increase in Viruses amongst the customers coming into our office in Broomfield, Colorado. Our clients have been asking for tips to avoid getting computer viruses.
1. Purchase a Good Anti Virus Program and Make Sure it is Updated. This one is key. So many times we go out to a client and they either have no Anti Virus program at all or it has expired. The best line of defense is a good offense. Please utilize a good anti virus such as AVG, let it run its scans, and do not let it expire. Of course, Anti Virus programs will not be able to stop all viruses but a good product like AVG would catch roughly 95% off all viruses before infecting your computer.
2.Be Wary of Emails from Apparently Legitimate Sources. Phishing scams are on the rise again. They are easy to catch when a bank you don’t do business with emails you to click on a link. Less easy to catch are emails that are meant to illicit an immediate response, for example, a Wire Transfer to your company didn’t go through click here to initiate payment, etc. Always be wary of these types of emails and err on the side of caution. Additionally, hover your mouse above the link to see where the link will take you. You can confirm a scan most times at that point.
3. Hold it….Don’t Click on that Attachment so Fast!. If you receive an email with an attachment from a company or someone you don’t know, please don’t click on it. Also, if you do receive an email with an attachment from someone you do know that you weren’t expecting, give them a call before clicking on the document.
4. Protect Yourself from Viruses Received via a Thumb Drive Device. There have been many instances when entire company networks have been brought down by one user inserting a USB Thumbdrive device that had a virus into a single computer. The virus was then able to spread throughout the entire network. We are recommending all of our customers use a new device called the Enigma which is a Thumbdrive Encryption tool. Also, it serves as a barrier to viruses being passed through a Thumbdrive. You would insert the Enigma in the USB port and any thumbdrive you need to download data from would be inserted into the Enigma. No virus will pass through the Enigma.
5. Don’t Use Open WiFi. We know that it is very convenient to use the Free WiFi at the Coffee Shop but please don’t do it. This is a very inviting atmosphere to a hacker. Why? He can obtain access to each and every unprotected device connecting to the network. Also, the hacker could distribute malware to your through the network as well.
