Convolution = Unique Sounds. There are loads of people showing you how hitting various household objects make for nice convolution reverbs. I’m not doing that.

Reverb with its own reverb

Find a nice long reverb, find a rich pad with movement. Record all 12 notes playing for 1 bar, then chop off the sound apart from the reverb.

The reverb will be a lot louder where it has a tone, so by doing this we’re making that resonance the same for anything you play.

Resample it again for some interesting textures, rinse and repeat as many times as you want and see what happens.

Arpeggiated Void

Record an arpeggio using a big reverb with short decay, make sure you label the recording with the tempo, so you’ll know what you’re matching to. I used noise because I wanted to avoid anything with too many strong tones in it.

The Hoover

Record a hoover. You will likely get some real harmonics to the sound, so you’ll need to surgically EQ those out or they’ll create nastiness.

Filtered Echo

Set a filter onto a pad with a rhythm. Long release. Play a note so that the filter keeps rhythmically playing as the note releases. Cut the sound so you get a nice, gradual fade out. I used the tremolo preset in Autopan, which worked nicely.
