Operational Technology (OT) cybersecurity is critically important on a national level because it safeguards the infrastructure that underpins vital sectors like energy, transportation, water supply, and manufacturing. These systems control the physical processes essential for the functioning of a country's economy and safety, making them prime targets for cyberattacks that can disrupt daily life, cause economic damage, or even threaten national security. A successful cyberattack on OT systems can lead to power outages, industrial accidents, or compromised water treatment facilities, endangering both citizens and the environment. As state and non-state actors increasingly target critical infrastructure, robust OT cybersecurity is vital to ensuring the continuity and resilience of essential services, protecting a nation’s strategic assets, and maintaining public trust in governmental and industrial systems. Governments must invest in securing these systems, as breaches can have far-reaching consequences that ripple through both the digital and physical realms.
