Climate-neutral Method of Producing Hydrogen: When it comes to renewable energies, hydrogen as an energy carrier can't be ignored. Hereon scientists are working on a climate-neutral method of producing hydrogen in which sunlight is directly utilised to split water: this is known as photoelectrochemical water splitting. The method breaks water down into its hydrogen and oxygen components. In a similar way to photosynthesis, solar energy is converted into chemical energy. Instead of a plant’s leaf, however, the scientists use, for example, photoactive material layers. The best materials are still very expensive and complicated to produce. Scientist Ragle Raudsepp explains in this virtual reality video how researchers utilize photosynthesis in plants to produce hydrogen. Experience science in 360°!


The Institute of Photoelectrochemistry focuses on the “artificial leaf”, which produces green hydrogen sustainably and in an energy efficient manner. The focus here is on surface coating and structuring to achieve the desired interaction with electromagnetic radiation. The research aim is to comprehensively understand the solar-assisted reactions with hydrogen, as these processes can be used selectively for climate protection and sustainable energy supply.
