Frame studies are a great exercise for analyzing values and composition. I've picked a handful of black and white films to study from (although it's also great for color analysis), starting with Billy Wilder's classic Sunset Boulevard.
Which I have not actually seen. I know. I'll bump it up in my "to watch" list.
