The cable tie was invented in 1958 by Maurus C. Logan while working for an electrical company called Thomas & Betts. The idea for the cable tie came to him while touring the Boeing aircraft manufacturer facility in 1956 and observing the labor-intensive and specialized manual process required to wire their airplanes. Maurus spent the next couple of years experimenting with various tools and materials before filing the patent for the Ty-Rap cable tie in 1958. The success of the cable tie can be attributed to its design, which allows for it to be easily and securely fastened. Today, there are more than 45 companies worldwide manufacturing billions of cable ties every year. In addition to their widespread use in various industries, cable ties have also been adapted for use by law enforcement agencies as plastic handcuffs. While they have multiple advantages over traditional metal handcuffs, they also have their drawbacks and require specialized tools for safe removal.
