In this video, we'll explore the fascinating story behind one of Denmark's most famous exports: LEGO. It all started with Ole Kirk Christiansen, a woodworker who opened his shop in 1916. After a series of unfortunate events, including a fire that burned down his workshop and the American Stock Market crash, Christiansen started creating inexpensive toys. This move eventually led to the creation of LEGO, which means "play well" in Danish.
The company's first toy was a pull toy prototype of a wooden duck, which became one of their most popular collectibles. During World War II, Christiansen's factory burned down again, but he saw an opportunity in the advances of plastic injection molding. In 1949, the company introduced the Automatic Binding Brick, which eventually evolved into the LEGO bricks we know today.
One of the reasons behind the success of LEGO is the design of its bricks, which has remained the same since it was patented in 1958. This allows LEGO blocks produced in 1955 to still interlock with any other part produced today. Another secret to LEGO's success is their commitment to quality, reflected in their "Only the best is good enough." motto.
