Peale Island WWII Shore Defense Gun, Wake Atoll, October 2024
In January 2024 a rogue wave struck Wake Atoll. On Peale Island the Shore Defense Gun was hit by the powerful wave. Already listing, the wave punched in the side of the carriage and it collapsed under the weight of the gun, which toppled over and now sits upside down next to the carriage. The ocean is working to sink the gun further down towards the water.
