About CPVC Union Valves...
A CPVC valve refers to a device that opens and closes a fluid path for control purposes, such as blocking and regulating fluid flow, preventing backflow, or controlling the direction of flow.
CPVC valves are classified by function, material, applicable standards, nominal diameter, nominal pressure, piping method, connection method between the body and cover, and operating method.
I will briefly explain the representative classification methods among them.
CPVC valves can be classified into manual valves, automatic valves, and self-actuating valves based on their operating method.
A manual valve is a valve whose opening and closing is controlled manually using a handle wheel, gearbox, lever, etc. Automatic valves are valves whose opening and closing mechanisms are automatically controlled using electric motors, pneumatic, hydraulic, or solenoid systems.
Self-propelled valves are valves whose opening and closing mechanisms are controlled by fluid pressure, buoyancy, or centrifugal force.
Additionally, valves can be classified into various types based on their materials.
Valve materials include iron, cast steel, forged steel, copper alloys, aluminum alloys, stainless steel, alloy steel, and plastics. However, metal materials are not suitable for chemical lines because corrosion progresses rapidly under chemical conditions.
To address this corrosion, stainless steel or alloy steel is used; however, they are heavy, difficult to handle, and expensive, making them uneconomical. In contrast, plastic valves primarily utilize PVC, C-PVC, PP, and PVDF materials. These valves are widely used in chemical plants because they offer excellent corrosion resistance to chemicals, thereby resolving the drawbacks associated with corrosion, while being lightweight and inexpensive.
Furthermore, CPVC valves can be classified structurally and functionally.
Here, we will briefly explain the structural and functional classification of CPVC ball valves.
CPVC ball valves are constructed with balls that are assembled through holes in the center of the fluid path and the central axis within the body. The valve opens and closes as the ball rotates the axis, resulting in superior opening and closing capabilities and the ability to rotate the handle 90 degrees.
Since a full fork equal to the inner diameter of the fluid-carrying pipe is possible, pressure loss is minimal.
Additionally, rotating the valve axis 90 degrees minimizes leakage at the gland packing section. However, since ball valves utilize a circular soft valve seat, using them in a slightly open state causes force to be applied to only a portion of the seat, which can lead to deformation.
For this reason, it is advisable not to use them for controlling flow rates by opening the valve gradually, except when fully opening or closing the valve.
These ball valves have rapidly evolved, primarily for industrial applications, and offer superior sealing performance, durability, operability, and low fluid resistance compared to conventional valves.
The characteristics of CPVC ball valves are as follows:
Low pressure loss.
Excellent operability.
Can be used as an automatic valve.
Excellent sealing performance. - Its compact size allows for installation even in small spaces.
Can be used at higher temperatures than PVC (up to approximately 90°C).
Ball valves are broadly classified by shape into Ball Valves/Compact Ball Valves and Union Ball Valves. They are further classified by connection method into Socket type, Screwed type, and Flange type.
Ball valves and Compact Ball Valves are lightweight, have a simple structure, and are designed to be compact and affordable. They are widely used in marine and agricultural industries, particularly for hydroponics, aquaculture, and greenhouses.
However, the Socket type of Ball Valve/Compact Ball Valve has the disadvantage of requiring the pipe to be cut and reconnected when replacing the valve, as it is joined via bonding or welding. Union ball valves are widely used primarily in industrial applications. Since the union design resolves the drawbacks of socket-type ball valves and compact ball valves, they offer the advantage of allowing the valve body to be easily and conveniently replaced by simply loosening the union section.
Additionally, since one end of the valve can be bonded while the other is...
