The twelve cranial nerves 'bout which I'll sing a little spiel
You are often told to learn them with, "Oh oh oh to touch and feel"
But this won't help you remember what's their function or location
So let's start with the olfactory which is just sensory.
The ethmoid bone has, a cribiform plate
The nerve comes in here and then terminates
It's not routinely tested so let's go to number two:
The optic nerve without which, your vision would be screwed.
Don't forget to check visual acuity separately!
With visual fields you start, then you grab a Snellen Chart
Then offer to do fundoscopy if you find deficiency
Then we check the oculomotor, the abducens and the trochlear
Of the muscles extraocular, pupil and cilliary.
Test for nystagmus and diplopia
That the pupils are concentric and circular
Reactive to light, consensual and accommodating
Now we'll go to the trigeminal which we have kept waiting.
The superior orbital fissure has room for just one more --
The ophthalmic nerve of the corneal reflex which phase ones can ignore.
Maxillary, Mandibular of ovale and rotundum.
Don't confuse them with the middle meningeal's spinosum.
V2 is sensory, not so for V3
Test jaw jerk and muscles masticatory:
Temporalis, masseter, medial and lateral pterygoids
Plus the tensor tympani, digastric, mylohyoids.
Anterior belly of digastric, that is!
The facial nerve may make you frown, but try to just recall

They're responsible for taste and for the salivary glands
Except for the parotid which I don't understand!
Orbicularis oculi and frontalis receive
Bilateral innervation so you would see
Raised eyebrows even with an upper motor lesion
Caused by a stroke or tumour if you get asked the reason.
Bell's is a LOWER unilateral motor neurone lesion.
The-e vestibulocochlear has two ganglions
Without which you couldn't stand up straight or listen to this song
So rub your fingers in their ears, do Rinne's and Weber's tests
Where sound radiates to the ear without neural deafness.
At number nine, the Parotid gets its slime
The glossopharyngeal also lets you taste your wine
Takes care of carotid bodies and stylopharyngeus
And the sensory component of the reflex of the vagus
I mean the GAG reflex guys.
The vagus is the wanderer whose course is such a pain
Just remember it came out the jugular hole of the brain.
The accessory, which through the big foramen first ascends
Comes out with 9 and 10, and the jugular vein.
Shrug your shoulders, turn your head to the side
To test the trapezius and sternomastoid
The hypoglossal nerve supplies the muscles of the tongue
And has its own canal which it doesn't share with anyone.
That's all the cranial nerves...there are!
