Issei Sagawa, born in 1949 in Kobe, Japan, came from a wealthy family. In poor health and very short, he developed complexes and vicious fantasies early on, mixing sexuality and cannibalism, particularly towards Western women, whom he idealized and envied.
In 1977, he moved to Paris to study literature at the Sorbonne. On June 11, 1981, he invited Renée Hartevelt, a Dutch student, to his home under the pretext of working on an assignment. While she was reading poetry, he shot her in the head, abducted her corpse, cut it up, and consumed several parts. He kept pieces in his refrigerator and took photographs of his actions. A few days later, he attempted to dispose of the body by placing it in two suitcases abandoned in the Bois de Boulogne, but he was quickly arrested.
Found criminally irresponsible in France, he was committed to a psychiatric hospital, then extradited to Japan in 1984. Due to a lack of judicial cooperation between the two countries, he was released shortly after his return, as the Japanese authorities could not legally prosecute him.
Rather than disappear, Sagawa chose the media spotlight. He published books, appeared on television programs, and became a controversial figure in Japan. He was often criticized for profiting from his crime, which deeply shocked public opinion.
He spent his final years in poverty and illness, notably suffering from a stroke that left him partially paralyzed. He died in November 2022 at the age of 73.
