Pegam in Lambergar

Pisov Pegam carju je:
'al maš junaka pod seboj,
da b se skusil on z menoj?'

In cesar mu odgovori:
'V deželi kranjski je doma,
Lambergar junak je ta!'

Prav Pegam: 'Pišite mu list,
doma pusti naj vse na stran,
perderja meni naj v bran.'

Dobil je Krištof pisemce,
na to mu mati rekla je,
kam naj mu v boju sabla gre:

'Hudiča ima Pegam dva,
premagat hočeš ti oba,
le glej, da te ne zmoreta.

Ak vidiš njega tri glave,
dve krajnje njemu pust obe,
na srednjo naj ti sabla gre.'

Do Dunaja mi dirja v skok,
so per kosilu vsi okrog,
Pegamu pade žlica z rok.

Tako še Pegam govori:
'Al pojdeva na gmajnico,
al pojdeva v ravno polje?'

-'Na polj žanjice žanjejo,
na gmajn pastirci pasejo,
medva pa greva med ljudi.'

Nasproti zdaj zadirjata,
za ušesmi se oprasneta,
si nič ne strita hudega.

Se drugič Pegam zaleti,
se Krištofu pokaže kri,
mu vendar sile ne stori.

Ko v tretje v kup zadirjata,
takrat se dobro počita,
za vselej boj razločita.

Je meril Krištof srednjega,
je njemu pravo glavo vzel,
ves Dunaj je zato vesel.

Mu reče tole svetli car:
'Junak ti, moški, Lambergar,
kaj češ imeti za tvoj dar?'

Pa Lambergar odgovori:
'Na Kranjskem mam gradove tri,
da b moji, hočem, lastni bli.'

Pegam and Lambergar

Pegam wrote to the emperor:
'Do you have a hero under your rule,
who would be able to test my might?'

And the kaiser responds:
'In Carniola he resides,
Lambergar is the hero's name!'

Says Pegam: 'Write to him a letter,
he must leave everything behind,
and rush to me to test my might.

Krištof recieves the letter,
and his mother tells to him,
where his sword in battle should lead:

'Two devils has Pegam by his side,
you will want to kill them both,
make sure they do not best you.

When you see his three heads,
leave the side ones for him to have,
at the middle one your sword should aim.'

And to Vienna he makes haste,
where everyone is gathered 'round the table,
and Pegam drops his spoon in surprise.

And Pegam speaks aloud:
'Shall we battle in the woods,
or on the open, leveled field?'

-'In the woods the shepherds herd,
on the field the harvesters harvest,
but we will battle among the people.'

And they ride towards each other,
they scratch each other by the ear,
but neither do any harm to their foe.

The second time Pegam makes his blow,
and Krištof's blood sees the light of day,
but no real harm is done to him.

When they ride for the third time,
they both land their blows well,
and forever distinguish themselves in battle.

Krištof aims for the middle one,
and takes of his one true head,
so all of Vienna celebrates.

The enlightened tsar says this to him:
'Oh, you hero, you true man, Lambergar,
what do you want for your reward?'

And Lambergar responds:
'In Carniola I watch over three castles,
I want them to forever be my own.'
