The advancement and proliferation of RF/microwave circuits and systems has shaped the arc of society from the Second Industrial Revolution to the Information Age. Since Maxwell published his unifying theory of electromagnetics (c. 1865) and Marconi invented the spark gap transmitter (c. 1896), practical applications of microwave theory and techniques have become ubiquitous features of contemporary life, realizing once-unimaginable capabilities in communications, sensing, computing, and a growing variety of other domains. This keynote talk will trace the history of RF technology from its inception to the present day, examining innovations in fixed wireless, cellular, and satellite communications and the underlying technologies that made them possible.
