This song is about a break up I went through a few years ago. It was off and on again, and throughout the entire relationship it felt like an out of control rollercoaster. When it was finally over, I remember I was out for a drive, thinking about the relationship and how it seemed like, despite of all my effort to keep things together, I was just kind of tossed in the trash in the end. At that moment the words that came into my mind to describe the way I was feeling were these, that I had been "relegated to the ash heap of love".
When I was with her, I had all kinds of imaginations of getting married, having a family, and growing old together. Once I realized that it really was over, it was like all of the hopes and aspirations I had had died. Those kids that could have been, that family could have been, all dead and relegated to the ash heap of love. That's where this song came from.
This song is meant to be sung as a duet but, since there is only one of me, here you go.
