FINAL FANTASY X
OMEGA RUINS
The only reliable source material I'm aware of is the Ultimania guide which lists the odds (1/3 for the two chest room, 1/4 for the three chest rooms, and 1/5 for the four chest room, totaling 1/240 chance for the 99 warp spheres). Ultimania is historically completely dependable, but there are still important details about how those odds are implemented and how FFX's RNG functions that we don't know.
First, the "order" theory.
At the beginning of each of my runs, I had created a save state. As I opened these chests and reverted to my save states, I had determined that from the moment you enter the Omega Ruins, the game has already decided which treasure chests contain treasure, and which treasure chests will trigger fights. No matter which order I opened the chests in, the same chests always triggered fights, and the same chests always rewarded treasure. So, in short...
ORDER DOES NOT MATTER.
Secondly, the "timing" theory.
While reading around, I thought it was kind of funny that people were busting out metronomes to play this game.
TIMING DOES NOT MATTER.
The game has decided if you will or will not get the 99 Spheres the moment you enter the Omega Ruins. The best you can do to get them is Soft Reset (L1 + L2 + R1 + R2 +Start + Select) and reload your game if you open a chest that contains a battle. Then, keep opening the chests until you end up with no encounters and 99 Warp Spheres. Also, IF you use an emulator, making a save state at the title screen and loading from there will not help you. The proceeding chests will always be the same if you choose to revert back to the title screen.
FINAL FANTASY X
OMEGA RUINS
