This is a song about looking back on younger days, remembering the excitement of an unrequited crush, and realising that those memories are best left like that, just as memories. The lyrics are by David Graaff and this is a new arrangement of the music I wrote a few years ago, to give it a country music feel.
The video was shot from trains passing office buildings in Vauxhall and Canary Wharf, in London, together with new buildings and the restored Battersea Power Station, filmed from the river, and one scene which is an abandoned shopping centre in Gran Canaria that we stumbled across during lockdown. The video trickery, for those who might be interested, is green / blue screen layering of videos on top of each other.
LOOKING THROUGH LIFE'S WINDOWS
I don’t know why I thought of you
Or why you came to mind
It’s been a long time since we went our ways
Since our lives became untwined
I must have heard your name somewhere
Now you’re back inside my mind
I don’t where you are - but could you be that hard to find?
Friend requests and update posts
Things I had to know
But your real-time, real-life living
Kept your online profile low
I searched for your existence
But the searches came back no
I had to keep on on trying though progress was slow
I’m looking through life’s window, Reflecting on the view
Reflecting on my choices, I remember me and you
Looking through life’s window, reflecting on the view
Remembering I couldn’t bear...
I couldn’t bear to be apart from you
I found someone who shares your name
Whose wall is not discreet
I imagine that I see you and your smile is still as sweet
All your friends and family are there for all to view
I click on every picture until I’m looking at you.
I’m looking through life’s window, Reflecting on the view
Reflecting on my choices, I remember me and you
Looking through life’s window, reflecting on the view
Remembering I couldn’t bear...
I couldn’t bear to be apart (from you)
And there you are, surrounded by your domesticit y
You are older, true, but something’s wrong
You don’t seem the same to me
Your life was pre-ordained – and I could never walk that path
And you could never spread your wings,
Your eyes have lost their spark
The rush I feel on seeing you erases all those years
The pain of unrequited love; the pain of lonely tears
And I’m so glad I had
the strength of mind to walk away
But even so I’m glad I glimpsed into your world today
I’m looking through life’s window, Reflecting on the view
Reflecting on my choices
I remember me and you
Looking through life’s window, reflecting on the view
I made the right the decision
The day I walked away from you
