A Closer Look: Exploring "A Long Arc"
The South’s role in photography mirrors its role in American history. Southern photography is frequently considered idiosyncratic, local, occasionally objectionable, and out of step with progress and the mainstream. Yet at crisis points in our nation (the Civil War, the Great Depression, the civil rights era, and arguably now), the photographic production emerging from the South has been exalted as a touchstone. "A Long Arc: Photography and the American South since 1845" presents over one hundred photographs that critically engage with the image of American identity.
