MURDERED: Laurie Houts
In 1992, Laurie Houts, a 25-year-old computer engineer, was found murdered near her workplace at Adobe Systems in Mountain View, California. The case entangled Laurie, her boyfriend, and his roommate, John Kevin Woodward, in a complex web of relationships and suspicions. Despite two trials in the mid-'90s, Woodward was acquitted, but decades later, advanced DNA analysis brought new evidence to light, leading to his third arrest in 2022.
Laurie Houts had a bright future ahead of her. Working for Adobe Systems, she was making her mark in the tech world of Silicon Valley. But her promising journey came to a tragic end on September 5, 1992. That day, Laurie was found strangled in her car, which was abandoned near a garbage dump close to her office. The rope used in the murder was still around her neck, painting a grim picture of her final moments. Her purse sat untouched beside her, ruling out robbery as a motive and deepening the mystery.
At the heart of the investigation were Laurie, her boyfriend, and his roommate, John Kevin Woodward. Woodward quickly became the prime suspect. His lack of an alibi on the night of Laurie's murder, combined with his complicated feelings for Laurie's boyfriend, painted a suspicious picture. Woodward was envious of Laurie because he had feelings for her boyfriend, feelings that were not returned. Moreover, Woodward's fingerprints were found on Laurie's car, adding to the evidence against him.
Woodward faced trial for Laurie's murder twice in the '90s. His first trial in 1995 ended with a hung jury, as many felt the evidence against him was circumstantial. The second trial in 1996 led to his acquittal. Without new evidence, the case hit a dead end, and Woodward moved to the Netherlands, where he continued his career in tech, becoming the CEO of Readytech.
The case went cold until 2020 when new DNA techniques provided the breakthrough investigators had longed for. DNA from the rope used to strangle Laurie and fingerprints inside her car were conclusively linked to Woodward. In 2022, during a business trip to New York City, Woodward was arrested for the third time. He was extradited back to California, facing charges once again for Laurie's murder.
Initially, a judge ruled Woodward couldn't be tried a third time due to double jeopardy. However, this decision was overturned by an appellate judge, who argued that the new evidence allowed for another trial. As of now, Woodward is awaiting his day in court, offering a glimmer of hope for justice for Laurie Houts.
