When Miya's parents couldn't reach her, they drove to Orlando to check on her. Using an emergency key, they entered her apartment, only to find it in a state of disarray—an alarming sign for a young woman known for her tidiness. Fearing the worst, they contacted the police, initiating a frantic search.
The investigation quickly focused on the complex's maintenance workers and tenants. Armando Manuel Caballero, a maintenance employee, attracted attention due to his suspicious behavior and the fact that he had access to Miya's apartment. It was discovered that Caballero had previously expressed a romantic interest in Miya, which she had rejected. This, coupled with his access to her living space, raised red flags.
On September 27, when authorities approached Caballero's residence to question him further, they found him dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, deepening the mystery of Miya's whereabouts.
The breakthrough came on October 2, after a tip led investigators to search an abandoned apartment complex approximately 18 miles from where Miya lived. There, in a wooded area, they discovered her remains. The condition of her body suggested a brutal ending, with evidence pointing towards abduction and murder.
Throughout the ordeal, DNA evidence and personal belongings found near Miya's body implicated Caballero as the perpetrator. The police concluded that he had abused his position to gain unauthorized entry into Miya's apartment, leading to her kidnapping and murder. This theory was supported by the manner in which Miya was bound and the secluded location where her body was found.
The aftermath of the case saw Miya's grieving family pursuing a wrongful death lawsuit against the Arden Villas Apartment Complex.
