South Africa 2024, Part 6: Adventure in the Northern Drakensberg Mountains
Our big road trip through South Africa in a rental Ford Ranger in July 2024: 3 weeks, 4,500 km from Johannesburg to Cape Town. Along the way, we visited the two kingdoms of eSwatini (formerly Swaziland) and Lesotho, crossed two oceans, explored the Drakensberg Mountains, encountered magnificent landscapes, and had countless wildlife sightings.
In Part 6 of this trip, we drove many kilometers of gravel roads for the first time, heading to the Nelson Mandela Capture Site, the memorial at the place where Mandela was arrested. From there, we continued into the northern Drakensberg Mountains to Phuthaditjhaba, a town with chaotic traffic. It wasn't far from our accommodation, the Witsieshoek Mountain Lodge, the highest lodge in South Africa at 2,300 m. The following day, we embarked on a challenging hike to Mahai Falls, Mahai Forest, and the rock fissure known as The Crack. Things got really adventurous. But see for yourselves.
