Lesson 25: Is this dish spicy or not?
Hello, everyone. Welcome to Managing Chinese in 5 minutes.
China is a big country, and every province or even city has its own special food, e.g. in Guangdong province, people like to eat steamed meat and seafood, while in Sichuan the food is very spicy. So, before making an order, it is better to ask “Is this dish spicy or not?” （这道菜辣不辣？）Also, today we will learn another way of asking a yes-no question, by repeating an adjective or verb before and after the negative word “不”.
Chinese character Pronunciation Meaning
这道菜辣不辣？ Zhè dào cài làbulà? Is this dish spicy or not spicy?
一点儿 yīdiǎnr a little bit
很 hěn very
太 tài too (to show a negative feeling)
能 (吃辣) néng can (as a modal verb, able to) eat spicy
可以(吃辣) kěyǐ can (as a modal verb, allowed to) eat spicy
广东菜 guǎngdōng cài Cantonese food
四川菜 sìchuān cài Sichuan food
