As far she can tell, Norfolk native Roberta Lea is the first black woman from Hampton Roads to pursue a career in country music. Roberta’s interest and passion for music began at an early age.
Though she would, in her words, follow the traditional path of college and carrer; the love for music never faded. Roberta continued to write and perform what sounded like country music but she hesitated to commit to it full-time because she didn’t see people like herself doing country music. During 2020 Roberta was inspired after finding another black woman country music artist named Mickey Guyton.
She left her career and gave herself over to music full time. Roberta now spends time between Norfolk and Nashville. Writing, recording and performing.
