Accountability Should Be The Measuring Stick In Education Presentation

by Brenda Johnson-Padgitt, Dr. D. T. McGeehan, EDU 510 Educational Assessment, December 14, 2015, Assignment 4

Slide 3:

With the passage of “Every Student Succeeds Act,” key players in education are celebrating the victory of eliminating the No Child Left Behind Law. The battle has been won but the war is still intense when it comes to the academic success of our nation's kids.

Slide 5:

Teacher accountability still needs to be looked at when it comes to educating students. The blame has too often been placed on high stakes testing or students who teachers feel are unteachable. Now that high stakes testing has been eliminated teachers will no longer have an excuse or anyone to blame. They will have to present their A-Game when it comes to meeting or exceeding the expectations of their state education agencies.

Slide 7:

There are 5 key highlights in “Accountability Should Be The Measuring Stick In Education.” These highlights are recommendations for Dallas ISD. They include teacher accountability, taking another look at the No Child Left Behind Law, the Every Student Succeeds Act, assessments and incorporating technology in the classroom.

Slide 12:

During the course of working on my project and taking this course I learned several things about educational assessments. One key topic of interest was creating assessments that are free from biases. Tests results can be unfair when different groups are tested with assessments filled with biases. Bias means unfair or unjust. The goal is not to produce faceless, gender-free, ethnic-free assessment materials. Rather, it is to represent gender and ethnic groups in a balanced, inoffensive, and fair way in those materials.

Slide 15:

While finalizing assignment 3 it affirmed my belief that effective teachers model and apply the ISTE Standards for students as they design implement, and assess learning experiences to engage students and improve learning; enrich professional practice; and provide positive models for students, colleagues, and the community.

Slide 18:

Before I recommend any new technology tool school or district wide, I would first implement it in my own classroom. I am a firm believer of testing out tools, methods or curriculums first with my students. The technology tools should be tested atleast for a month to see how students respond to them. Educators should also record assessment data before and after using new technology tools. They should look for any improvements in assessment results while using the new technology. Two new technology innovations that would be practical for Dallas ISD are the Flipped Classroom concept and for special needs students the district should implement Thunder Screen Reader.

Slide 23:

When all key players in U.S. Education take responsibility for their role in educating students there will be change and progress. Congress is responsible for passing education laws that promote academic excellence and are practical for all involved. State Education Agencies are responsible for drafting state curriculums that align with the current education law. School districts are then responsible for implementing the curriculum. Teachers must also create lesson plans that align with state mandated curriculums and students must show mastery of the objectives in each tested core subject for their grade level. When everyone is held accountable for their part in education, pointing fingers and placing blame else where will be a thing of the past.
