Elfen Lied is a manga that was published from 2002 to 2005, and an anime adaptation began airing in 2004. The manga was created by Lynn Okamoto, and the anime was directed by Mamoru Kanbe.
The opening of Elfen Lied is known for being one of the most beautiful and poetic. It has a song sung in Latin that reminds us of Gregorian chant, accompanied by images that introduced characters from the anime in paintings by the Austrian artist Gustav Klimt. Klimt belonged to the symbolist aesthetic movement. Symbolism sought to move away from the realism and positivism of the late 19th century, turning to the metaphysical, sentimental and synesthetic.
