On the obverse, is the portrait of, Saya San who was a prominent figure in Burmese history, particularly during the colonial period. He was born in 1876 in Shwebo,Burma, and became a Buddhist monk in his early life. However, he disrobed later and became involved in anti-colonial and nationalist movements.

Saya San gained significant attention as the leader of the Galon Rebellion, also known as the Saya San Rebellion, which occurred from 1930 to 1932. This uprising against British colonial rule was one of the largest and most significant in Burma during the colonial era. He organized his followers into the "Galon Army" and he was proclaimed "king" at Insein in 1930. Galon, or Garuda, is a fabulous bird of Hindu mythology.

The rebellion began in Tharrawaddy district in central Burma and quickly spread to other parts of the country. Saya San, who claimed to be the reincarnation of a Burmese warrior king, rallied thousands of farmers, and other discontented groups against British rule. The rebellion was fueled by various grievances, including high taxes, forced labor, and economic hardships faced by the Burmese population.

Despite initial successes, the rebellion was eventually crushed by British forces with considerable brutality. Saya San was captured in late 1931 and later sentenced to death by hanging. His execution marked the end of the rebellion, but his legacy as a nationalist leader and symbol of resistance against colonialism remains significant in Myanmar's history.

This odd value was reportedly chosen because the individual numerals sum to nine, The Then Dictator, of Burma, General Ne Win’s favorite number. An astrologer promised that the introduction of these notes would assure General Ne Win would live to be 90 years old, And in fun fact General Ne Win died in 2002 at this age.
