What's new about playing chords is that we're not just aiming to produce one note, but ultimately three notes simultaneously. This places a completely new and more complex technical demand on the fretting and picking hands. The fretting hand no longer just places one of four possible fingers on the corresponding string at the correct fret, but suddenly three fingers on three different strings. And all at the same time. This is unfamiliar and requires some coordination.
