Bass Basics: Synkopen
Many songs feature syncopation. These are rhythmic shifts that can define a song so strongly that a distinctive rhythmic motif gives it a unique and instantly recognizable character. We love these shifted rhythms. They fascinate us. Otherwise, there wouldn't be so many popular songs with them. I'm thinking of songs like "Stand By Me," "Baby Love," "Treasure," "Uptown Funk," "Isn't She Lovely," "Hold The Line," and so on. But what exactly does the term "syncopation" mean, and what makes it so difficult for us to play these particular shifted rhythms?
