An inherited high-degree nearsightedness.
It is usually defined as myopia with a refractive error greater than -6.

It can progressively worsen to higher powers of myopia, but usually stops between ages of 20 and 30.
It may raise the risk of developing more serious sight conditions later in life. It can lead to blindness if left untreated. Regular eye exams are critical.

(Causes)
• Eyeballs grow longer than they should.
• keratoconus: The cornea is too steep.

(Treatment)
• Use of eyeglasses or contact lenses.
• Refractive surgery.

(Complications)
• cataract
• detached retina
• glaucoma
• blindness
