Werner Stiller was a German agent and defector. From 1972 to 1979, he was a full-time employee of the Ministry for State Security (Stasi) of the GDR, ultimately holding the rank of first lieutenant. He decided to defect to West Germany and offer his services to the Federal Intelligence Service (BND), which gave him the codename "Machete." His escape from the GDR in 1979, along with numerous secret documents, is still considered one of the most spectacular espionage cases of the Cold War.
