The conclusion of the bloodiest war in American history may seem neat, tidy, and inevitable in history books, but it was actually much more complicated and its outcome far less certain. The war did not come to a screeching halt when Lee surrendered to Grant at Appomattox Court House. Things might have turned out differently, if not for the decisions of a handful of men and at least one woman. This video explores why a peace treaty between the North and South was impossible, the impact of the Lincoln assassination on the war's conclusion, and the importance of Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston's surrender to Union Major General William T. Sherman at Bennett Place in North Carolina, in violation of orders from Confederate President Jefferson Davis.
