The conclusion of the bloodiest war in American history may seem neat, tidy, and inevitable in history books, but it was actually much more complicated and its outcome far less certain. The war did not come to a screeching halt when Lee surrendered to Grant at Appomattox Court House. Things might have turned out differently, if not for the decisions of a handful of men and at least one woman. The final installment of this series explores the final three major land surrenders of the Civil War as well as the surrender of the C.S.S. Shenandoah in Liverpool, England.
