An elegant haenyeo lives in Yeon-dong Village, Gampo-eup, Gyeongju. She is 51 years old this year. She is a young haenyeo named Lee Jeong-suk. Every day, she dives with the village haenyeo in the sea just a minute away from her home.
Among the dozen or so haenyeo, Kim Sun-ja, rumored to be the most skilled, is none other than Jeong-suk's mother. It was her mother who encouraged her daughter to become a haenyeo about 20 years ago when she returned to her hometown with her husband.
That is how her daughter, Jeong-suk, learned to dive, and now she has become a seasoned veteran haenyeo just like her mother. This mother and daughter haenyeo love the water so much that they have never once grown tired of diving into the sea every day.
For them, a nourishing meal is a table set with the various seafood they brought today! A bowl of mulhoe (raw fish salad) with ice floating on top, featuring all kinds of fresh seafood, is enough to get them through the summer.
Today, Jeong-suk even borrowed a men's wetsuit to teach her husband how to dive. To her husband, the sea of Yeon-dong Village, his wife's workplace, is a place of both fear and constant gratitude. This summer, the couple decides to spend this season a little more wisely by swimming together in the sea that the wife loves.
