This exercise is inspired by post-impressionist Henri Matisse. Use ready-coloured paper, or apply washes of paint to white paper and cut shapes out of it. Move the cut-outs around to explore compositional tension or balance. This allows you to experiment with shape and colour in a playful and tactile way without having to rub out or over-paint. The finished cut-out can be an artwork in its own right, or a preparatory image for another painting or drawing.
