It can be easy to overwork a drawing or a painting and by setting a time-limit, you can challenge your existing habits. If you usually spend an hour on a drawing, set it for 20 minutes, and then gradually decrease the time until you are making 5 minute drawings. You could even spend two minutes, one minute, or even 30 seconds on a series of loose and fast studies. This exercise will keep you moving and looking, challenging you to decide what is most important to communicate about your subject, without getting lost in the details.
