"We are continuing offensive operations in the Kursk region. Currently, we control about 1,000 square kilometers of Russian territory," Ukrainian military commander Oleksandr Sersky told President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during a meeting this afternoon.
Earlier today, Kursk Oblast Governor Oleksiy Smirnov said evacuation orders had been extended to the Belovsky district, south of Ukraine's main military exercises, which has a population of 14,000.
Another 11,000 people have left their homes in the Belhorod region, near the border, due to what its governor called hostile activity on the border.
Ukraine sent troops into Russia last week in its largest cross-border operation since Moscow launched its invasion in February 2012. Authorities in the Kursk region announced they were expanding the evacuation zone to include the Belovsky district. Authorities in the neighboring Belgorod region said they were evacuating the border district of Krasnoyarozsky.
"For the health and safety of our residents, we have begun moving people living in Krasnoyarozsky to safer locations," Belgorod Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said on Telegram.
The attack on Kursk has already led to the evacuation of 212,000 Russian citizens.
