Jaguar Land Rover’s (JLR) EV test facility in Coventry has welcomed an unexpected new recruit – a four-legged robot dog named ‘Rover.’ This advanced robot plays a key role in JLR’s strategy to fully electrify its vehicle lineup by 2030.

The Coventry site is a complex, high-energy environment with countless assets that need constant monitoring. Rover’s job is to patrol and check for any early signs of wear or operational issues, which helps keep testing and development on track for upcoming electric models, such as the Range Rover Electric.

Unlike a regular dog, Rover has a unique ‘kennel’ where it charges its 50V battery between shifts. Capable of working around the clock, this Boston Dynamics creation isn’t distracted by noise or unexpected sights. It follows pre-programmed routes, completing as many as 24 patrols daily, opening doors, climbing stairs, and navigating busy areas with ease. Rover is equipped with AI to spot potential problems and collect data, which helps engineers focus on analyzing results and making informed decisions on maintenance or repairs.

Thanks to its four-legged design and a robotic arm, Rover is incredibly flexible. Its onboard sensors can detect gas leaks and monitor battery temperatures using thermal technology, ensuring safety in the workplace and allowing technicians to continue their tasks without unnecessary risks.

Currently, JLR is planning to expand the use of these robotic dogs across more of its facilities worldwide. For instance, the Solihull plant, where preparations are being made for the launch of the Range Rover Electric, could be a key site for Rover's deployment. Solihull is also where Jaguar will begin producing a new generation of electric vehicles, starting with a four-door GT, set to have a range of around 700 kilometers and a price starting at £100,000.

This investment in robotics is part of JLR’s larger £18 billion Reimagine strategy. At Lyons Park, the facility is also testing plasma cleaning robots that remove tiny dust particles from battery cells before bonding. These particles would otherwise be invisible, making the robots essential for the production process.

By incorporating technology like Rover and plasma robots, JLR is setting the stage for a future driven by innovation and electrification.
