How to Build a Raised Garden Bed with Wood - Easy and Cheap to Make - Organic Gardening in Arizona
In this video, I will show you how to build a raised garden bed easy and cheap. I used Douglas Fir wood, exterior screws, and Kellogg Organic Gardening Mix for raised garden beds. Everything I used, I purchased at Home Depot. I'm sure Lowe's or your local hardware or gardening store will have all the materials needed to build your raised garden bed.
When picking a spot for your raised garden bed, make sure to take under consideration what you are planting and the sun exposure during the summer months.
After deciding on the location for your new raised garden bed, clear the area of all gravel, rock and weeds and try to level it the best you can.
When deciding on the size of your raised garden bed, consider how much room you have and also make sure there will be space left for pathways on each side if your raised garden bed is going to be wider than 2 feet. I wouldn't recommend building a garden bed wider than 4 feet.
Now, the building process:
1. Make sure to cap the shorter sides with the longer boards to make your raised garden bed stronger and to minimize wood warping.
2. Use the 2x3 board (cut into 4 pieces) to provide extra strength and sturdiness for your raised garden bed.
4. Use the two 2x4 boards to attach along the length of your raised garden bed. They will provide seating area for you when gardening so you don't have to kneel down (and will add to the sturdiness of your raised garden bed).
Before you add the organic gardening soil mix to your raised garden bed, you should cover the ground underneath with cardboard to prevent weeds growing into your garden. Also, this will prevent your organic soil from mixing with whatever soil is beneath your raised garden bed.
Lastly, if you are located in the desert like me (or any place that have snakes, especially poisonous ones), make sure to put sharp gravel around your raised bed garden so they don't get even close to it. However, in the summer, always use caution when reaching into your garden. I have a rule, never stick my hand where I don't have a clear view. You can have a stick handy and check the area by pocking into the plants.
