Georg Elser was a German carpenter who attempted to assassinate Adolf Hitler by planting a bomb at a Nazi rally in Munich. This event took place on November 8, 1939, at the Bürgerbräukeller, a large beer hall where Hitler was scheduled to give a speech. Elser's plan was meticulously thought out, and he spent over a year planning and preparing for the assassination attempt. Elser believed that by removing Hitler and other high-ranking Nazi officials, he could prevent the further escalation of World War II and the suffering it would cause. He secretly installed a bomb behind the speaker's podium, which was timed to explode during Hitler's speech.
