Claus von Stauffenberg was a German army officer and a key figure in the German resistance movement against Hitler and the Nazi regime during World War II. Initially, Stauffenberg supported the rise of the Nazi Party, seeing it as a vehicle for restoring German power and prestige after the humiliations of World War I and the Treaty of Versailles. However, as the war progressed and the extent of the Nazi atrocities became apparent, Stauffenberg grew increasingly disillusioned with Hitler's leadership and the direction in which Germany was headed. Stauffenberg served with distinction in several campaigns during the early years of World War II, including in Poland, France, and the Soviet Union. He was severely wounded in North Africa in 1943, losing his left eye, his right hand, and two fingers on his left hand. These injuries only strengthened his resolve against the Nazi regime.
