The Aosta Valley welcomes me with its breathtaking beauty, and I'm ready for an unforgettable adventure: the conquest of the Guide d'Ayas Refuge, at 3,425 meters above sea level. My journey begins in Saint Jacques, where I take trail number 7.
The panorama surrounding me is a succession of wonders: glaciers glistening in the sun, remnants of an ancient glacier that tell stories of bygone eras. The trail leading to the Mezzalama Refuge runs along a moraine, the imposing vestige of a now-vanished ice giant.
I continue my journey, crossing the Pian di Verra and arriving at the Lago Blu. Its crystalline waters, with their surreal colors, enchant me. I cross the Verra stream and begin the climb towards the Guide d'Ayas Refuge. But the real surprise of this day is a close encounter with some ibex, majestic creatures that reign supreme in this Alpine kingdom.
The hike is challenging, with a considerable elevation gain. I reach the Mezzalama Refuge at 3,036 meters, satisfied but aware that the Guide d'Ayas Refuge is still far away. I decide to tackle the last 200 meters of elevation gain to reach a glacial lake, created by the melting glacier. The effort is amply rewarded by the breathtaking view that opens before my eyes: the lake, nestled between the rocks, sparkles in the sun like a precious gem.
I'm exhausted, but happy. My legs can't take it any longer, and I decide to stop here, at 3,200 meters above sea level, after 11 km and 1,600 meters of elevation gain: no small feat, but the satisfaction is immense. Getting up here was a wonderful discovery.
